Studio emma sophia is a ceramics atelier that produces functional pottery. After her BA at the Willem de Kooning Academy, fine-art graduate Emma took it upon herself to learn how to craft pottery. All products are designed and crafted by Emma in her Breda based, old prison building-turned-studio. The clay designer crafts cups, bowls, plates and pieces that can hold figs and flowers. Additionally, it is important for Emma to craft pottery that, apart from being decorative, can be utilised.
Emma uses wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques, sometimes mixing the two, and fires her stoneware clay in an electric kiln to 1220 degrees. Additionally, Emma often uses a few of her favorite clays and mixes them together to create new colors and textures. With this method, Emma recycles clay that she wastes during throwing and trimming. Therefore, each studio emma sophia design exists out of a unique clay-combination.
